HELLO 3rd Trimester - 28 week update

I was 28 weeks on 4/27.
I can't believe it. 28 weeks. I'm so ecstatic!
The last couple of weeks have been pretty eventful (at least the most eventful up til this point) so feel free to skip this blog post since it just may bore your socks off with details.
On 4/14 (yup, our 4 year anniversary!) I had the appointment to check my glucose levels (see 26 week update). It turns out that it was 160!! I couldn't believe it. There isn't anyone in my family that has diabetes (that we know of) and Its not like I've been eating horribly. I don't eat sweets that often at all but after I failed this test I started thinking about all the things I do eat that have sugar -- FRUIT and carbs. Fruit has been my main pregnancy craving (especially berries!). Mmmm. I think I was eating fruit instead of ice cream when I wanted something sweet.
On 4/19 I went in for the 3 hour glucola test. I had to fast so I couldn't eat anything for breakfast. This was bad because I normally eat as soon as I get up because I'm already so hungry. When I arrived at my 9am appointment, they pricked my finger to test my sugar to see if they could even give me the sugar drink. It was 83 (normal sugar level for fasting). They took 1 vial of blood to check the fasting levels and then I drank the sugar drink (lemon-lime this time which I did NOT think was as easy to drink as the fruit punch during the 1 hour appointment). About 20 minutes after I drank it, I started to feel queasy. I went to a room to lay down and I'm so glad I did! It really helped pass the 3 hour appointment. Well, that & Words With Friends (which is a scrabble game I play on my phone with some friends). My blood was drawn every hour for the next 3 hours. Luckily I could drink water because I was very thirsty. After the 3 hours were up, my head was throbbing and I felt very weak. I got a salad from Chick-Fila and headed home for the rest of the day to rest. I took a little nap after I ate but I still didn't feel well when I woke up. I don't think I felt well again until the next morning!
I anxiously awaited my results but didn't really think I would actually have Gestational Diabetes. They said they would call me the next day...but didn't (even after I left them two messages). I called again the following morning and the nurse said they were waiting on Dr S to review my results to see what she wanted to do. The nurse shared my results. The first vial (1 hour after drinking the sugar drink) was 176 (above 180 is failing) and the 2nd vial (2 hours after drinking the sugar drink) was 190!!! (above 155 is failing). I don't know the other two numbers but the nurse said they were completely normal.  I guess my body just isn't processing sugar the way its supposed to. The nurse called again later and although I am technically "borderline" Gestational Diabetes (because I only failed one vial) said that Dr S wants me to see a nutritionist and watch my sugar intake very closely until I see her again ....
Which was on 4/27 (28 week check-up)
My weight gain was 18 lbs total and my blood pressure was 101/64.
During my appointment Dr S was very positive and said I looked great!! She said she's really not worried about me at all because she knows Ill do what I need to do to keep the diabetes under control. She said I probably have it in my family and just don't know it (cough*MOM*cough....who should be tested) and she said they will monitor me closely after Will is born too.

She explained that she wants to keep an eye on me because its the  borderline Gestational Diabetes patients that can end up having big babies and complications because they just "fly under the radar". She said its the Gestational Diabetes patients that end up being OK because they are monitored closely. Dr S decided she wants to monitor me closely just to make sure Will is doing ok. I have been instructed to watch my diet (very limited carbs & sugars), meet with a diabetes nutritionist (Friday, May 6th) and take my sugar levels 4 times a day (once when I wake up (fasting) and then 2 hours after every meal). She said my number should not be above 120. I was not thrilled to have to take my sugar levels but I'd do anything for the health of our William. Dr S wants to do an ultrasound at 34 weeks (5 weeks from now) to check in on him and see how big he is getting. If he is getting too big, she may decide to schedule a c-section or a time for me to be induced.
I started taking my sugar on Friday (4/29)
My levels have really been great! They have mostly been in the 80's. I've found that really watching what sugars/carbs I eat and being active after I eat (going for walks or doing some cleaning around the house) helps to break down my sugars (Dr S said this would be the case). I've only had one level above 120. It was 132 on Saturday night (I think it was a combination of things that I ate at my baby shower and then we had dinner at Gumbeaux). I should have ordered a salad but I ordered blackened shrimp, salad & cheese grits. I shared it with Becky and I didn't eat much of the grits but I still think they contributed. We also ate late and were not finished eating til 9 or so. I was sooo tired and couldn't stay up until 11 so I took my blood sugar and hour & a half after I ate instead of 2 hours. The extra 30 minutes probably would have given my body time to break down the sugars more.

All in All I've found that taking my blood sugar is expensive (since I have a $150 prescription deductible that I have not used since I usually don't have any prescriptions - the total out of pocked was $132 so far and the sticks for the glucometer should be covered going forward, ill just have to pay the co-pay), inconvenient (I have to carry around a travel sized glucometer, a needle to prick myself, the test strips, cotton balls & alcohol swabs. I have to remember!! and stop what I'm doing to take my sugar 2 hours after I eat. This should be interesting at work. Ill have to set a reminder on my computer. Sometimes its frustrating because I have thick skin on my fingers and its hard to draw blood but I'm getting better at it as I go.

I really don't mind doing this for the health of me & William. I know that this is important for him & that's all that really matters to me!! I can't believe its 2-1/2 months until we meet him! :)
